Nailist of the hour is salon manager and Bunka Fashion College Tokyo nail art lecturer, Akagi Momo, who begins today’s gel nail session with a nail consultation survey, served with a glass of iced gyokuro cha.

An exceptionally thorough and wonderfully pain free nail filing and cuticle cutting session commences, in which Momo transforms split nails and dry, cracked cuticles into perfect oval shapes while our TBS staff flicks through beautiful design samples on the iPad provided. The nail preparation process comes to a close as each nail is wiped down to remove residue oils, the secret to a long lasting manicure.

Enter the One Stroke, Freehand Nail Art Performance

Clients are presented with a choice of Bio Sculpture Gel or Calgel, the former known for its strengthening and chip-free properties, the latter a Japanese brand of soft bio gel popular for its thinner and more flexible qualities. Our staff opted for the Bio Gel option, recommended for those who perform a lot of typing work. With choice of design and colors decided during the nail care procedure, Momo proceeds to mix the selected polish colors on a square of aluminum foil, creating tints and shades complementary to our staff’s cool skin tone.

 
Following the application of base layer and color, in the course of which each step is kindly announced beforehand, the nail art magic begins. Under our master nalist’s tiny, controlled, precise strokes, each of the nails emerge as an individual and collective art piece of dreamy geometric designs, pastel spring colors, and subtle textures. The resulting nail design is then coated with a choice of shiny or matte finish, or a creative mix of both if you so fancy!  

An Invigorating Hand Massage as the Finishing Touch

The manicure session comes to a close with a brief yet refreshing hand massage. Momo applies Lisarch’s q.i.d. roll on organic plant-based essence oil, LIM Nail’s in house product, around the cuticles, and along nail edges gently smoothing the product from fingers to palm before massaging in firm, circular strokes. She ends the massage by briefly wrapping each hand in a steaming hot towel, wiping away any excess nail oil. A mildly fragrant honey ginger hand & body moist cream is then rubbed onto our staff’s pair of now beautifully manicured, soft, supple hands.
